What's New at Inorbital

Happy New Year!

2006 was another year in which we witnessed a myriad of changes and technological improvements to our industry which is really just more of the same. From the last year we've learned how to improve and enhance web presence development with full out Web 2.0 deployment and implementing the latest Flash scripting.

This issue of the Interactive Quarterly dubbed the "Vanity Issue" is another double issue (Fall/Winter) which will look at some the internets must see projects from the past year and according to PC World, the worst websites of the year in our year end round up.

Year End Round Up - Best Of
These are some of our favourite web sites of the year (and beyond).

Geoterra
Part of General Electric’s broad-ranging “Ecomagination” campaign, this site enlivens environmental data with a fictional island interface. Users learn important facts about GE products, while playing fun and sometimes challenging games.

Now What
The online companion to an innovative State Farm campaign couches valuable insights about insurance in humorous, real-world scenarios. Complete with tools that explain different types of coverage and how much they cost, the site offers friendly demystification of an often daunting subject.

Specialized Body Geometry
Cycling meets science class on this site for Specialized bicycles. Users poke around to learn how Specialized gear works with the body, while graphic dissections of muscles and skeletons—complete with squishy sound effects—make learning science just as unsettling as it used to be.

Kohn Peterson Fox Architects
At every level, this image-heavy site for Kohn Peterson Fox highlights the firm’s innovative approach to contemporary architecture. Its exploratory interface is inspired by floors and stairwells, while every page acts as a case study, allowing users to familiarize themselves with company projects.

what is web 2.0 fluff or substance
In Web 1.0, a small number of writers created Web pages for a large number of readers. As a result, people could get information by going directly to the source: Adobe.com for graphic design issues, Microsoft.com for Windows issues, and CNN.com for news. Over time, however, more and more people started writing content in addition to reading it. This had an interesting effect—suddenly there was too much information to keep up with! We did not have enough time for everyone who wanted our attention and visiting all sites with relevant content simply wasn’t possible. As personal publishing caught on and went mainstream, it became apparent that the Web 1.0 paradigm had to change.

is 2.0 fluff or substance

Enter Web 2.0, part collaboration environment, part business tool, part entertainment platform, the next step for the internet. It's considered a vision of the Web in which information is broken up into “microcontent” units that can be distributed over dozens of domains. The Web of documents has morphed into a Web of data. We are no longer just looking to the same old sources for information. Now we’re looking to a new set of tools to aggregate and remix microcontent in new and useful ways.

To answer the question is Web 2.0 just another buzzword or a substantial move forward for the internet and the way we interact with each other? Absolutely - the success of such huge 2.0 sites like Wikipedia, YouTube and Canada's Flickr  are great examples of full execution of collaborative community type web based tools. Now organizations and SMB's can expect to implement these same type functions to their own websites or be left behind.
