Rework by 37signals Book Review

Dec 28, 2010

There’s already more than enough reviews and summaries about this book but I did want to add to the cornucopia of info by saying what a great and inspiring read this is. It’s really a Business 2.0 approach based on the similar foundation of Web 2.0. What I mean by this is the actual book is to the point, very little clutter, succinct and all about the content, no fluff or filler with plenty of white space to go along. This makes sense since the authors are from the web business world. These guys started a web design business, 37 Signals, and productized some online services that they themselves needed and used and became very successful and are now sharing the knowledge from their success in Rework.

What made this book so engaging was that several of the points are obvious but really needed to be reinforced on paper for them to take hold and make sense. The author really does buck some of the conventional business trends and some even contradict existing business rules. Business 1.0 is long gone and welcome Business 2.0 documented here by web developers of all people. A business that is no more than 15 years old and really in its infancy and making up principles as they go along.

The book reads well and quick but the ideas will inspire and get you motivated to implement.

This is the best summary I’ve seen out there with 13 simple rules which will only encourage you to get the book and learn the rest.

My favourite points

  • Learning from mistakes is overrated. Learn from successes.
  • Reduce mass at work. Reduce meetings, office politics, inventory, expenses.
  • If you have a choice between half a product and a “half-assed” product, choose half a product.
  • Don’t copy the competition. Create something and have them copy you.
  • Embrace being a small company.
  • Hire people who can manage themselves.
  • When things go bad, take ownership and control of the situation.

From the Publisher

"Most business books give you the same old advice: Write a business plan, study the competition, seek investors... If you're looking for a book like that, put this one back on the shelf.

"Rework "shows you a better, faster, easier way to succeed in business. Read it and you'll know why plans are actually harmful, why you don't need outside investors, and why you're better off ignoring the competition. The truth is, you need less than you think. You don't need to be a workaholic. You don't need to staff up. You don't need to waste time on paperwork or meetings. You don't even need an office. Those are all just excuses.

What you really need to do is stop talking and start working. This book shows you the way. You'll learn how to be more productive, how to get exposure without breaking the bank, and tons more counterintuitive ideas that will inspire and provoke you.

With its straightforward language and easy-is-better approach, "Rework "is the perfect playbook for anyone who's ever dreamed of doing it on their own. Hardcore entrepreneurs, small-business owners, people stuck in day jobs they hate, victims of "downsizing," and artists who don't want to starve anymore will all find valuable guidance in these pages."
